Kit 35045 tree_family@hotmail.com  Alexander Gordon

I am a direct descendant of a line of Scottish Gordons.  Very briefly, for it is a long history, one of my ancestors was Alexander Gordon, the 2nd son of the 3rd Earl of Huntly who was given the lands of Strathavon, and in contemporary documents is always referred to as Alexander Gordon of Strathdown. He married the youngest daughter of John Grant of Grant.

One of Alexander's sons was William Gordon of Delmore who, along with one of his brothers, was granted the rights and privileges of legitimate birth by a charter issued under the great seal of Scotland, at Perth, on the 24th June, 1553.

In passing, one of Alexanders other descendants (of the Gordons of Cluny) subsequently became Governor of Pennsylvania in the 18th c.

In 1567, in the pardon given by Queen Mary to the Gordons who had been present at the battle of Corrichie in 1562, he is described as being in occupation of Croughly - lands alongside the River Strathavon in Banffshire not far from Tomintoul.

From this date on this line has been known as the 'Croughly Gordons' .

The earliest we are sure of is my g/g/grandfather William Gordon, born circa 1815 somewhere in Scotland, matriculated Magdalen Hall (now Hertford College) Oxford 1840, married Susan (or Sussanna) Sussex Judd 1841 in Northam, Devon July 17, 1841, migrated to Australia with Judd in-laws sometime around 1857 (we think into Melbourne, and apparently came out in two groups - maybe because of shipping difficulties as the gold rush was on.) Susan was the daughter of Peter Judd and Patience Judd nee Sussex.

William subsequently ran a private school in Camden, NSW. He died died 24 October 1877.

Two children of the marriage were Cosmo Percy Boulderson Gordon born 10 Nov 1841 and Augusta Talbot Mordaunt Gordon born 1843. Cosmo is my g/grandfather.

Father named on William's marriage certificate as Colonel William Alexander Gordon of St George's Hanover Square, London. No further definate information although we suspect he was Colonel (later Lt General) W A Gordon, CB, of Nairn, Scotland, and thereby one of the Croughly Gordons, from near Tomintoul Scotland. No idea of who William's mother was, unfortunately.

My Great-great-great grandfather was Alexander Gordon born about 1785 in the Parish of Kilrea, Co. Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland. he married a Peggy Campbell and had their first child, John Gordon, about 1809 - an unknown dauhgter followed. They migrated from Ulster to South Plantagenet Township, Prescott Co.,
Ontario, Canada in 1818. Much of the family remains there or in nearby Ottawa, Ontario. A small group, grandchildren of the original Alexander, named Alexander, Mary
Jane and a John migrated to Tawas, Michigan about 1860, John proceeded on to Vachon Island in Washington State.
