1. William3 GORDON. William was born in Nov 1805 at Daffin, Carlsluith, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, Scotland, 545155N0042032W. William's occupation was noted as surveyor and auctioneer in Gatehouse of Fleet. In the Supplemental Volume to the "Dictionary of Land Surveyors and Local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850, edited by Peter Eden (William Dawson & Sons, Folkstone), a copy of which was reviewed at the West Register House in Edinburgh, the entry for William Gordon reads as follows: GORDON, W. 18(? 25)- 33, STF; mineral; in High Street, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbright, civil and mineral engineer; pupil of Adam McPhail."

The entry for Adam McPhail states: "1804-29; STF; of Newcastle-under-Lyme; at one time professor of mathematics at a military academy, London; trained W. Gordon."

The West Register House also contains an extensive collection of old surveys which are indexed by surveyor. Only one survey, as of July 1992, was listed for William (RHP 13036-1861) and it is titled "Topographical Plans of Cally, Coppicewood, Alphabetically Arranged - 1861, Enlarged from the Ordinance Survey by W. Gordon". This volume was checked out and reviewed by this researcher.

In the 1851 census of Woodhead, Parish of Anwoth, Kirkcudbrightshire, William is listed as "Surveyor, Auctioneer, Land Agent and caretaker of 220 Acres employing 6 laborers."

In a booklet titled "Gatehouse Memories" edited by George McCulloch for the Gatehouse of Fleet Community Council Bicentenary Committee - 1995, there is an article on page 2 titled "The Old Pub Scene in Gatehouse of Fleet Circa 1850".

The article stated that in 1850 the population of Gatehouse was about 1,920 and it had about 20 pubs in the village. One pub called "The Commercial" was owned by William Gordon (an auctioneer) and Dalziel and James Wilson.

Another memory on page 13 titled "Twa Galloway Ponies...." read as follows:

"John Hall, druggist and William Gordon, auctioneer, were members of the Galloway Rifle Corps at the time of the great Edinburgh Review in 1861. As the two of them were proceeding along Princess Street an old woman, seeing them, cried out, "Oh there are twa Galloway ponies anyway; anyone can tell them easily: short p' the legs and gie near the grun." This researcher has not determined the mother of William. His father, James, married Jean Heron in 1813 and had a family with her, but I doubt that she is also William's mother. William was born in 1804 yet the children of James and Jean Heron were all born after 1819, quite a gap in years which might indicate a second marriage and family for his father James.

a. James4 GORDON. James was born circa 1830 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He was listed as a resident in the census report on 7 Jun 1841 at Front Street, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. He married Elizabeth MCKEAN on 4 Mar 1857 by the Church of Scotland at Laurel Villa, Gatehouse of Fleet, Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. He resided at the at Manor House, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England, circa 1857. He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census at Manor House, Newsham, Yorkshire, England. James was employed as a land agent at Llangynwyd Lower, Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales, circa 1870. He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census at Poplar House, Llangynwyd Lower, Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales. James died 1892. According to an article in the Wigtown (Scotland) newspaper, at the time of his wedding to Margaret Elizabeth McKean, James was residing at the Manor House, North Riding, Yorkshire, England. He was employed as the land agent for the Right Honorable Lord Greenock.

This researcher has not determined where James died and is buried. His wife Elizabeth died in 1900 in Saint Paul, Minnesota and is buried in Oakland Cemetery. The monument marker on her grave would indicate that James died in 1892 and is also buried there but the cemetery records indicate that only Elizabeth is buried in that plot.

Little Falls Mourns Death of T.C. Gordon

Every resident of the city as well as those in other localities who knew Thomas C. Gordon will learn with sorrow and regret of his death which occured yesterday afternoon at his home here, following a year's illness.

Though everything known to medical science was done in his behalf, added to te loving care of his wife and two daughters, who are trained nurses, the ravages of disease could not be checked and he gradually grew weaker, finally falling into a peaceful sleep shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon from which he did not waken. he had been in fairly good health the past few months, but suddenly became weaker yesterday morning.

Thomas C. Gordon was a native of Wales, born in the southern portion of that country on March 16, 1866. He was the fifth of a family of nine children and received his elementary education at a private school in Wales. He came to this country when 21 years of age, landing at New York city and coming directly to Minnesota. At St. Paul he took up work with the Little Falls Water Power company. However, he remained in that city but a month, when he transferred to this city. That was in 1887 and he has since made Little Falls his home, having been prominently identified with the life of this place. For about two years after forming his connection with the company he was assistant to the engineer and also kept the books of the company. In 1889 he was made secretary-treasurer. The duties of general manager were conferred on him in 1903.

In 1918 Mr. Gordon disposed of his interests in the Water Power company and shortly thereafter engaged in the automobile and garage business in partnership with his two sons, Warren and harker.

In addition to his duties with the Little Falls Water Power company and the Gordon Motor company, Mr. Gordon also found time for taking an interest in several other business ventures. In the fall of 1888 he organized and assumed the management of the Gordon Lumber company here, which firm did a retail lumber business and Mr. Gordon continued at its head for three years after which he disposed of his interest. In 1899 he formed a corporation known as the Peoples Ice company, and he remained with that company for twelve years. In 1890 he also organized the Little Falls Building and Loan association and was made its secretary and treasurer. He continued in that connection as an officer for about three years. Mr. Gordon was also secretary of the Little Falls Milling company from 1890 to 1894 and was secretary of the Little Falls Electric company, now inactive.

He was instrumental in forming the Morrison County Electric Light, Heat and Power company, now out of existence, and was its secretary - treasurer. He filled the same office for the Pike Rapids Hydro-Electric company, which owned and controlled the excellent power site a few miles below the city. Mr. Gordon through his unusual ability contributed very largely to the commercial life of his chosen city and this community is much indebted to him for its advancements along many lines.

Thomas C. Gordon was married May 17, 1889 to Mary A. Stillwell, and four children were born to them. They are Warren, Harker, Bertha and Mercy. The two sons have been associated with their father in the motor business, Miss Bertha is a trained nurse employed at Rochester and Miss Mercy has similar employment at Milwaukee.

Mr. Gordon was for many years a devout member of the Episcopal church and assisted greatly in its work here. He served as alderman of the city for two years, and for 15 years or more was a member of the board of education. He served as president of that body for eight years.

While not directly interested in agriculture, Mr. Gordon had the best interests of the farming element at heart and was an earnest advocate of 20th century methods in that vocation. As an evidence of his sympathy with those engaged he filled the office of president of the Morrison County Agricultural society for several years.

Mr. Gordon held fraternal affiliations with the Masons, Elks, Maccabees and Woodmen, in the workings of all which he evinced more than a passive interest. he possessed keen foresight, good judgement and his honor and integrity were above reproach. He was one of the worthy citizens of Little Falls who was always anxious to acquire for his city all possible advantages possessed by any other and as a man of many excellent parts he was held in high esteem by all.

The following is an excerpt from the "Biography of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gordon given by Mrs. Gordon and taken from the "Histories of Morrison and Todd Counties" as recorded by Mrs. Minnie Cochrane for the Morrison County Historical Society - November 1937.

Thomas C. Gordon was born in the southern part of Wales, March 18, 1866. He was the son of James and Margaret Elizabeth Mckean Gordon. Elizabeth McKean Gordon was born in Kirkcudbright, Scotland. (Ed. note: She was actually born in Lancaster, Manchester, England) James was born in Dumfries, Scotland. (Ed. note: He was actually born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England).

Although he was educated as an engineer, he devoted most of the active years of his life to agricultural work in various parts of the United Kingdom. The first harvesting machine to enter Ireland was imported from the United States by James Gordon. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a "man of strong individuality and marked ability."

Thomas C. Gordon received his elementary education in a private school in Wales. In 1887, when twenty-one years old he came to the United States, landed in New York City, then came directly to Minnesota. He first located in St. Paul and worked for the Little Falls Water Power Co. A month later he was transferred to Little Falls. For two years he was assistant to the engineer and kept the books for the company. He became Secretary Treasurer in 1889 and General Manager in 1903.

Besides his duties with the Little Falls Water Power Co., Mr. Gordon was interested in several other business ventures. In 1888 he organized the Gordon Lumber Co. and was manager of the company for three years, then disposed of his interest. He organized the

People's Ice Co. in 1890, remaining with the Company for twelve years when he sold his interest. In 1890 he organized the Little Falls Building and Loan Association. He was Secretary Treasurer of the organization for three years. He was Secretary of the Little Falls Milling Company from 1890 to 1894, also Secretary of the Little Falls Electric and Water Power Company. Mr. Gordon organized and was Secretary Treasurer of the Morrison Electric Light, Heat and Power Company and of the Pike Rapids Hydro-Electric Company.

On May 17, 1889 Thomas C. Gordon married Mary A. Stilwell in Little Falls. In about 1893 Mr. Gordon built the home at 600 4th. St. S.W. where he lived until he died. He also owned a summer home at Birch Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gordon had four children: Warren McKean Gordon, James Harker Gordon, Bertha Gordon, and Mercy Gordon.

Thomas C. Gordon was a Republican. He was much interested in civic affairs. He was alderman for two years, president of the Agricultural Society, member of the school board from 1904 to 1930 when he resigned. During that time he was President of the Board from 1910 to 1920. He took an active part in affairs of the Civic League, being especially interested in the Playground project sponsored by the League just before the World War. Summer playgrounds for the children with two part time paid directors were established. The work was given up when the United States entered the war. Petrus Liljedahl, the Athletic Director for the movement, went overseas and was killed.

In summing up his character, the "History of Morrison and Todd Counties", published in 1915, said of him: "Mr. Gordon is a good representative of a virile type of manhood - the men who do things, and these men become natural leaders in any community where this lot is cast. Mr. Gordon possesses keen foresight, good judgement, and his honor and integrity are above reproach. He is one of the citizens of Little Falls who are always anxious to acquire for their city all possible advantages possessed by any other and is held in high esteem by all."

In 1918 Mr. Gordon disposed of his interest in the Water Power Co. Soon after that, in partnership with his sons, Warren and Harker, he organized the Gordon Motor Co. This company built at 117 S.E. 1st St., a building to be used as sales room with garage in the rear, and took the agency for Chevrolet cars. After the death of Mr. Gordon, the company sold both building and the business.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon were active members in the Episcopal Church. Mr. Gordon was for many years an officer. He was also a member of the committee which had charge of the building of the present church completed in 1900 and donated the chancel window, the subject of which is "Resurrection Morn".

Thomas Campbell Gordon died April 17, 1923. The following is taken from the editorial column of the Little Falls Transcript" of that date: "In the passing of Thomas Campbell Gordon, Little Falls suffers a distinct loss. He was one of her foremost citizens, a manly man - one whose energy and business sagacity were ever in waiting to do whatever task he might be called upon to do. His was an exemplary life, above reproach. While Mr. Gordon gave a greater share of his time and talents to public affairs than the ordinary man, yet domestic life was the paramount factor of his life. He loved his home folks and in turn was loved by them. They have the heartfelt sympathy in the community in which he so long served and the lasting knowledge that this city is a better one for his having lived in it."

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Gordon sold both the home and the lake property. Since then she has spent the greater part of each year with her daughters, although she still calls Little Falls home. She usually comes back twice a year. The first eight years after she left here she spent in Minneapolis. Since then she has been with Miss Bertha Gordon in Chicago. They reside at 915 East 56th Street, Chicago.

Chef Gordon in Action

Beginning with this evening and for several days if T.C. Gordon cannot be found in his office during regular business hours, he can be reached by phone at his residence, where he plans on doing the "chief cook" act with the electric range now being installed. The result of Mr. Gordon's experiment will be watched with interest as several are planning on installing electric ranges in the near future. The electric range is not on;y a convenience, but an economizer in fuel as shown by its use in other places and will duplicate its usefulness here.

Warren received leg wounds when his outfit was bombed by about 25 German airmen. At the same time he was injured, one of his close friends, who was standing next to him was killed. It was the same bombing in which Sgt. John Patyk and Ronald DelaHunt were injured.

Peter Gordon. Knox County is the abiding place of many citizens, for innate worth and native force of character, are a credit

to her, and prominent among these may be found a gentleman of whom we write, a retired farmer, living on section 12, of

Copley Township. He stands high in the community as a man of solid and substantial character, and holds different offices in

his township, having been Road Commissioner for some length of time, and is a School Director, laboring faithfully in the

interests of education.

Mr. Gordon was born in Creetown, Scotland, May 19, 1810. His parents were James and Jane (Heron) Gordon, both of

Scotland. They were farmers by occupation, and their family consisted of four children – Peter, Margaret, Alex. and David.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon died in 1854 and 1857 respectively.

The subject of our narrative spent the years of his life up to his majority on the home farm, and attended school. In 1840 he

emigrated to America with the high hopes and eager ambition of early youth, with the one idea of making himself a name and

a home. Landing in New York, he came by way of the lakes to Chicago. From that city he came to Knox County and settled

in section10, of Copley Township. Here he purchased 40 acres of prairie land, on which he built a log house 16 x 20 feet,

and there he lived for six years. To his first purchase he added by degrees 560 acres, and continued to reside on this until

1885. He has at present time 890 acres of land, and has given to his four children 160 acres each. In 1885 he built a

handsome residence in Victoria, where he now lives.

He was married March 1, 1845, to Mary Ann McDowell Tait, who was born Jan. 24, 1814. She is the daughter of John and

Anna (Livingston) McDowell, natives of Scotland. Her father came to America in 1839, settled in Copley Township, on

section 14. In 1867 he died, the mother having preceded him in 1824, taking her departure from this life in Scotland.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon have a family of six children, four of whom are living – James, Elizabeth M., Alexander H., and Albinus

N. James married Margaret McQuarrie; Elizabeth M. is the wife of William Robson, and is the mother of one child, named

Percy E.; Alexander is the husband of Mary Olmstead, and they have four children as follows: Arthur, Lizzie E., John H., and

James P.; Albinus N. married Miss Emma Smith, who has borne him two children – Peter T. and Leroy S.

Mrs. Gordon by her first marriage had a family of four sons, namely, John, William F., Peter G. and Houston P. These have

all acted nobly in defense of their country, enlisting in the war of the Rebellion in 1862., and giving all they had to give in that

noble cause. Peter G., who had become Lieutenant, was killed at the battle of Nashville; John was wounded at Dallas and

died at Chattanooga, from the effects of his wounds; the other two returned home to their home when the war was over, with

gratitude for the boon of their lives, but with sadness for the two who had perished in the great struggle which robbed so

many households of husband or father, brother or son. The four brothers all enlisted in Co. G, 89th Ill. Vol. Inf.; Col Hotchkiss

was the commander.

Mr. William Tait, the deceased husband of Mrs. Gordon, died in 1843, at his home on section 16, in Copley Township.

William Tait, Jr., is a physician at Galesburg, and was married to Miss Rhoda Sperry, a native of Oneida County, N.Y. To

them have been born two children, both living – May J. and Margaret M. Houston P. unites in wedlock with Mary Levalley, a

native of Knox County, and they are the parents of one child – Annie J.

Mr. Gordon is Republican in politics and an important factor in this community, and, with his wife, is a working member of the

Presbyterian Church.
