A Brief Family History Of The Gorden's In Madison County Indiana
Until a few months ago, my family all thought that our great great grandfather Anderson Gorden's father was named Benjamin Gordon but information provided by Gladys Moore, my 3rd cousin 1 time removed, convinced me that Anderson's father was William Gordon from Rowan County North Carolina. Gladys and I are from the same line of Gorden's / Gordon's. In the few census reports and land grants I have seen, Anderson's name was usually recorded as Gorden and his children also kept the 'en instead of 'on.
I was raised on the Gorden family land that was given to Anderson Gorden for service in the War of 1812. My father, Kenneth, worked the land until my grandfather Welden Gorden died in 1939. After his death Kenneth had to sell the land in order to divide the estate with his brother and a half sister. We then moved about 20 miles further south to Pendleton, IN and lived on a 40 acre farm from 1942 until my father's death in 1987. The farm has since been split into 5 acre tracts for home sites.
