"To form this essay in a chronological order - which is the most appropriate route - it will be commenced with John Milne and Jean Mitchell. Unfortunately, information on the earlier Milne’s has not been able to be recovered. All that is known to place them at the
beginning of the Milne ancestry is that John Milne was born in 1766. He married Jean Mitchell in January of 1787, and they had six children: Barbara, Male, William, Margaret, John, and James. The family line discussed and researched here begins with John II, son of
John I and Jean Milne. John Milne II was their fifth child, born 3 January 1787 in Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1808 he married Margaret Anderson, also a native of Aberdeen. Altogether they had seven children: Helen, Margaret, Fairly, John III, Christian, David, and Alexander.
All of their children were born in Scotland, and later immigrated with their parents to Canada. In a published work by the Howick Historical Society, THE LINES OF HOWICK, information states that “in 1836, they sailed for America”. It is unknown if the entire family
immigrated, but it has been stated that both John Milne II, his wife Margaret Anderson and John Milne III with his new wife Mary Moir made the trip and arrived in Elora, Ontario."
John Milne and Jean Mitchell had the following child:
3. i. JOHN3 MILNE was born on 03 Jan 1787 in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire, Scotland (Footie Farm). He died on 07 Oct 1867 in Elora, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. He married MARGARET ANDERSON in 1808. She was born about 1785 in Scotland. She died after 1867 in Elora, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada ((?)).

Note: John's will was recorded in Wellington County Probate Book E,, pp 415-416. (FHL film 0555617.) John left an estate worth $1900. His executors were his son John and his son in Law Robert Gerrie.
The will was dated 10 Feb 1863 and the probate dated 12 Oct 1867. Margaret Anderson Milne, his wife, was listed as a widow (evidently still alive) and Fairly, his son, was listed as already being dead.
The copy of the will is difficult to read but it is clear that John had two more children that were previously not known to me. One whose name was perhaps Ellen and the other a daughter named Christiana Milne Land.

Family History Library Microfilm: 1030067From the book, "Elora - the early history of Elora and Vicinity" by John Connon, Joseph Tytler from Kincardine O'Neil sailed from Aberdeen in 1836 on the ship "Universe" to New York, travelling via the Hudson River and Erie Canadl to Oswego, and then by schooner to Hamilton, arriving in Elora on June 20, 1836.
Also from Connon:
"Having decided to come to Canada, Mr. [William] Gerrie, senior, arranged with a ship captain in Aberdeen for a passage. Unon further inquiry, he found that the vessel was not going to sail as soon as he expected, so gave up his place on that ship, and took passage on another, which was to sail a week sooner. He was to learn that the one who starts first does not always make the best speed. Their ship, an old whaler, sailed from Aberdeen on a Saturday about the 11th. of June 1836, and that day ten weeks they saw America. Two weeks later they arrived in Hamiton. The next day, being the Sabbath, they atended Church, and, to their great surprise, the service was conducted by one they had left behind in their native parish, and who had sailed on the ship which Mr. Gerrie had thought too slow, - the Rev. Alexander Gardiner - afterwards pastor of St. Andrews Church, in Fergus."
