Fifteenth Entry in the Family Bible - WILLIAM ADIE born Oct 5th 1880 Worked in Inchcoonan's Brickworks from 1900 until 1956 when he was awarded a Solid Gold Watch - Swiss Made for his long service. This heirloom is to be handed down to the oldest living Male Adie and is current held by Gordon Adie as at 12 Sep 2011. See Photograph. The Inchcoonan Brick Company in Errol was capable of producing 10 million bricks per year and was in existence from the 1870's until 1990 when it discontinued production. It was re-opened in1994 but was finally shutdown in 2008 making the 27 staff redundant. In it's hayday it was one of the largest employers in the "Carse".

I will be 65 years old at the end of this month so I think the time is right to try and establish, as far as it is feasible, as to what really is our family’s background so as it will be helpful for future generations.
Up until about a year ago I had always considered that I was an Gordon Clan member and proud of this connection especially with my first name also being Gordon and as the Adie’s were considered to be a Sept of the Gordon Clan.
About 3-4 years ago, my sister, Phyllis Duncan, began gathering together the  family documents and Family Bible etc and constructed  a basic family tree.
However, after studying the information she had collected she began to express doubts as to whether our family truly were ADIES and perhaps we were in fact ALDIES as in Aldie Castle & Farms situated in Perth & Kinross near Powmill and associated more with the Mercer or Murray families.
Therefore, it was decided, because I had retired and had more free time available, and also the oldest living member of the family, that I should take over the project of trying to establish and verify our family history in more detail.
Mainly using existing family documents and the internet I have managed to determine a fairly strong audit trail with supporting proof, photo images of POR records etc of a unbroken chain of relationships all the way directly back to about 1650. This is when I hit the brickwall due to lack of accurately detailed OPR records prior to this date.
I have also a Premium Plus membership of MyHeritage .com which through the use of Smartmatches has thrown up thousands of connected trees but these are nearly all in the USA and virtually nil related to the Adie’s.

If you take a map of Scotland and in the County of Angus draw lines between Kirriemuir, Forfar and Glamis the area contained within this triangle thus formed is where the Adie / Aldie / Addie families have been settled since from at least 1650 until 1915. This is when my greatgrandfather died in Glamis and his son, my grandfather David, moved to work in Dundee and then to Kirkcaldy in Fife.
These ancestors living in Angus were either farm owners or tenant farmers and those who were not involved with agriculture mainly worked on the Strathmore Estates. ie the menfolk in the gardens of Glamis Castle and the womenfolk in the Castle itself as domestic servants.

From the actual records and images I have obtained for this branch of our family it can be observed that the surname changed regularly from Addie to Adie to Aldie and back again to Adie.  Even within the same generation eg Will Adie had four sons born between 1717 and 1724 and the 4 OPR Birth records all in Kirriemiur with similar handwriting gave the surnames as Adie on 2 of them and the other 2 as Aldie and even changed his own name to correspond. Therefore I am beginning to draw the conclusion that these name changes were more due to misinterpretation by the person writing up the register than distinct change of family associations.
It would be very useful if through your Project our Adie and Gordon connection could be determined one way or the other.
Furthermore, I have read a great deal of documentation which states that the Adies are a sept of the Gordon Clan but have found no direct information as to where and when this relationship was established.
It would be very helpful and interesting to our family if we could find out why our faction of Adies settled in Angus and where they originally  came from prior to say 1650.
There may of course be further connections to the Gordon Clan since the most prominent names featured in our family tree are Adam, Adams, Adamson and to a lesser extent Atkinson and Dorward which I believe are also septs of the Gordons.

To try and resolve some of the above questions, it was decided that since I was the eldest living male Adie family member that I should submit my DNA for testing.
The current situation is that I have carried out the tests and posted back the specimen swabs by Airmail to US last Wednesday 29th February.
