NOTES ON GEORGE GORDON
George Gordon was the fifth Earl of Aboyne, later 9th Marquess of Huntly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gordon%2C_9th_Marquess_of_Huntly) and had 3 boys and 3 girls with Ann Cole Manwell (aka Mrs Elliot), illegitimately. (He also had 8 legitimate children with Catharine Cope.) George and Ann's son George Eliot Elliott emigrated to New Zealand and married Catharine Marne.
The 1841 census shows two Ann Eliotts born in 1796 and 1821 (bracketted together, indicating family tie) living in High Street, Swanage in the household of Robert Burt, 50, stonemason, with Laetitia his wife, the Burt children and Ann Manwell [his mother-in-law].According to a message from Joan Dean to B.T.: "It is a long and well documented story about Ann Cole Manwell - she had a defacto relationship with George Gordon of Aberdeen, Aboyne Castle, they produced 6 children in London. George Gordon when he visited the home of Ann Cole Eliott went by the name of Eliot Eliott. The children had no idea who their real father was until George Gordon ran out of his fortune and had to put his teenage children out of boarding school. Ann's son George left England for New Zealand asking his mother 'Whom did you marry?' 'It was a runaway marriage,' she replied. He did not return to England until his mother and George Gordon had died. And so the secret was kept until George Eliot Eliott from New Zealand left a letter in his probate and will. There were Gordon crests and photos from Aboyne Castle and other things relating to George Gordon Earl of Aboyne Castle [sic]. A well kept secret."
A third source supporting the link between George Gordon and Ann Cole Manwell is the neat, handwritten copy of a letter sent by J. J. Freeman (almost certainly John Joseph Freeman, solicitor, 1851-1937) to Emily Stuart (Arbon) Burt. The author believes that a miniature painting described by Emily was of Ann Cole Manwell "who was born 23 Feb 1794 and died 9 Jan 1865[sic]. She was the aunt of your mother & made an irregular alliance with the Marquess of Huntley[sic] and was known as Mrs Eliott." J. J. Freeman referring to a pedigree book of 89 pages or more, and finishes by sending his love to Winifred (presumably Emily's daughter).
