Generation No. 1

1.  JAMES2 DOUGLAS  (UNKNOWN1)1,2 was born Abt. 1710, and died Bef. 17703,4.  He married MARGARET ELLIOT5,6 October 28, 1731 in York, Maine7,8.  She was born Abt. 1712, and died November 30, 1794 in Topsham, Maine  or York, Maine9.

Notes for JAMES DOUGLAS:

French and Indian War roll muster

'Hush thee !, hush thee !, little pet thee, do not fret thee, the Black Do uglas shall not get thee' was a rhyme sung by worried mothers to comfort c hildren in the days of Scottish raids. It refers to a friend of Robert t he Bruce called Jamie 'the Black Douglas' (1286-1330), who was much fear ed in England. Douglases have long been associated with the border count ry and the name originates from Douglas in Lanarkshire. The name derives f rom Dubh Glas, meaning 'black stream' and as well as being the origin of t he surname has also given rise to Douglas, the Christian name. Willi am de Duglas is the first known member of the family and lived in the twel fth century. Other Douglases include William Douglas 'The Hardy', fath er of the Black Douglas and Governor of Berwick in 1296 when the town fe ll to the English. At the Battle of Otterburn on the 19 August 1388 the fa mous rivalry between the Douglases and the Percy family of Northumberla nd reached a dramatic climax. James Earl Douglas invaded England with an a rmy of 4000 soldiers and burned Northumberland and Durham as far as Brance peth. At Newcastle Douglas taunted Harry Hotspur Percy who was safely prot ected behind the defended town walls. Later Hotspur attacked Douglas and h is army at their camp at Otterburn and the battle commenced. James Dougl as was killed in the battle but only after he had correctly predicted a Sc ottish victory - 'I hae dream'd a dreary dream, beyond the Isle of Sky e, I saw a dead man win a fight, I think that man was I'

Notes for MARGARET ELLIOT:

Ancestry of Margaret Elliot is unknown.  Researched the family of Willi am Elliott of Beverly, Massachusetts and Wells, Maine with no success.  T he names of William, Andrew and Francis appear in that family.

Margaret probably was sister of Jennat/Jane Elliott, wife of Joshua Gray, progenitor of the Gray family of Hancock Co., Maine.  The Gray's fir st two children were born in Brunswick and later they settled in Wells, Ma ine.  The only Gray name used by James and Margaret Douglas was "John ", a name which may be a clue to Margaret and Jennat's father.

Eliott the surname is thought to derive from an Anglo-Saxon forename Elewa ld which means 'the elf ruler', although the name could also be a diminuti ve of the name Elias. After the Norman conquest the name occurs as a foren ame in the form Heliot. Earliest records of the surname include a Willi am Elyot mentioned in the Assize Rolls for Somorset in 1257 and a Willi am Eliot mentioned in the Subsidy Rolls for Sussex in 1327. It is thoug ht that these south country Eliots have a surname which derived from Eli as and that the Elliott families of the north were descended from an Elewa ld who lived in Cumberland in the year 1279. Until the fifteenth century t he Elliott surname of the Anglo-Scottish border still occasionally occur ed in the form Elwald or Elwold. Spellings were inconsistent and other for ms including Elwuad, Elwat, Elwood, Eluat, Eluott, Elioat and Elwand are r ecorded. Even today there are at least seventy derivatives of the surna me including four different spellings of the basic name which are Eliot, E liott, Eliot and Elliott. The last spelling is said to be frowned up on by the Scottish border Eliotts where according to an old rhyme 'The dou ble L and single T descend from Minto and Wolflee, the double T and sing le L mark the old race in Stobs that dwell, The single L and single T t he Eliots of St Germains be, but double T and double L, who they are nobo dy can tell.

Notes for EUNICE DOUGLAS:

The years of the births of Andrew and Eunice are in dispute between the vi tal records of Hancock and Albion Counties and the computation of the birt hdate from the tombstones.

It was especially difficult for me to reconcile this relationship becau se they had the same last name and the same birthday, October 4.  I felt t his was too coincidential to be true.  But I realize now that it was not u nusual for first cousins to marry during this time period -- therefore, t he same last name.  And I found their tombstones in Ohio [Treacle Creek Ce metery in Mechanicsburg, Ohio) and computed their birthdays from the engra vings and the birthday's both came out to be October 4 ("Eunice Wife of An drew Douglas died October 1, 1865, aged 83 years 11 Mo 28 D" and "Andrew D ouglas died June 22, 1865, aged 86 years 8 Mo 18 D").  Andrew in 1779 a nd Eunice in 1781 -- which is disputable according to the record boo ks in Hancock and Albion Counties, Maine.  Then I found records of their t hree older sons, Joshua, John and David Ordway, in Sugar Creek, Ohi o.  So I am now satisfied that this Andrew and Eunice are the correct indi viduals for this line.

Another book of Clinton Marriages, Albion Co., Maine from the DAR libra ry recorded the marriage of Duglis, Andrew and Eunice.

                  v.    JOHN DOUGLAS, b. November 29, 1779, Sedgwick, Hancock Co., Maine; m. MERCY DORR, June 12, 1812, Blue Hill, Maine; b. May 17, 1793.

Notes for JOHN DOUGLAS:

1772 located in Castine, Maine1774 located in Brooksville, Maine (origina lly called Sedgwick)

John Douglas was a farmer and a mariner.  In 1784 he was located in Brooks ville as a settler and proprietor.  He sold Lot 1-111 to Abner Dodge and t he lot was sold to Joshua Grindle in 1793.  On 14 August 1786 and Linco ln County Deed shows that John Douglas of Naskeag (Sedgwick) conveys la nd to Nicholas Snow.

Notes for MERCY DORR:

According to Almon A. Gray and Walter A. Snow, "The Gray Family of Hanco ck County, Maine" Second Edition -- Polly Door B Mar 14, 1792, who see ms to be the one Fisher gives as b May 14, 1793 who m John Douglass

If Mr. Gray is right Polly and Mercy may be the same person and the mon th is in question:  is it March or May and is the year 1792 or 1793?

Notes for WILLIAM DOUGLAS, JR.:

William Douglass, Jeremiah's older brother, married Olive Smart. Accordi ng to some probate information I found in Penobscot County, the Smart gir ls were evidently daughters of the John Smart with whom William Douglass w as associated as early as the 1790 U.S.census taken at Twenty-Five Mile Po nd Town, Maine.

Notes for JEREMIAH DOUGLAS:

Jeremiah Douglass took his family west from Howland, Penobscot County, Mai ne, to Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin, around 1840. My father's cousi n, Maybelle Douglas Hart, wrote in a 1936 manuscript that Jeremiah made t he move at the urging of his cousins, Frank and Cushing Douglass. The on ly Cushing name association I have found is with William Cushing Hammat t, with whom the Douglasses and Smarts had several real estate dealin gs in Penobscot County. I  believe there's likely to be a marriage or t wo somewhere behind these given and second names.  (by John Goodwin Dougla s)
