William Nory, subp rior of St. Andrews, c.1400 (Wyntoun, bk. ix. c. xx) is probably William Nory, canon of St.An drews cathedral, 1415. Anny Nory is recorded in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA.,P. 314), and William Nor y leased Ledcassy in Angus, 1443 (Cupar-Angus, i,p. 119). John Nory was the king's chaplain i n Kirkwall, 1460(Diplonwtarium Norvegicum, v, P. 599), and Walter Nore, notary inStrathendric k, 1480 (Strathendrick, p. 194). Thomas Nory and James Norywere burgesses of Edinburgh, 148 2 (Neubotle, 304). Patrick Nory hadremission in 1489 for his tiart in holding Dumbarton Castl e against theking (APS., xii, P. 34), Arthur Norye, witness in Perth, 1547 (Rollok16), and Al exander Noray was rector of Ferne, 1589 (REB., u, 228). Orr is a sept of the MacGregor Clan.
The Lowland branch of the "Orr" family takes their name from the OldNorse personal name, "Orr e", meaning `blackcock'. It is first recorded inthe Ragman Roll of 1296 in the person of He w Orr. The Scottish surname"Orr" is common in Renfrewshire, Glasgow and Kintyre. In the 16thc entury, it is frequently found in the Scottish southwest.
In 1539, John Orr was appointed schoolmaster in Ayr
The Highland branch of the "Orr" family takes their name from the Gaelicword "odhar", meanin g dun or drab. The name is found in, among otherareas, Atholl and Moy. "Orr" is also a surn ame found in Ireland. On thesite of the Battle of Boyne in Ireland, there is a plaque dedicat ed to aWilliam Orr who fell while fighting on King William's side. Theinscription indicates t hat he, and the other Irish Orrs, were Protestantsettlers from Scotland.
Orr is also listed as a sept of Clan Campbell. The Campbells were given acrown grant by Rober t the Bruce for their aid in raising him to thethrone in 1368 which acknowledges Duncan MacDu ihbne as founder of theCampbells, who were established as Lords of Loch Awe. Loch Awe wasMacG regor land. In 1607 Archibald, seventh Earl of Argyll, was grantedformer MacDonald lands in K intyre, while in 1615 Campbell of Cawdor wasallowed to purchase Islay and most of Jura whic h had previously belongedto the Macleans of Duart. Therefore since both the highland and lowl andlands that the Orrs were associated with were owned by Clan Campbell andalso the lands o f the Macleans (note that May Orr's son was DouglasMcLain Todd) it is likely that her famil y was associated with ClanCampbell as well as MacGregor and Maclean.
